Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old ambitious MBA student from Tripura, tragically lost his life following a brutal racial attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Originally from Nandanagar in Unakoti district, Angel was in his final year at a private university. His father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, is a constable in the Border Security Force (BSF), posted in Manipur. The Brutal Incident on December 9, 2025
On the evening of December 9, 2025, Angel Chakma and his younger brother Michael were shopping for household items in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. A group of six local youths, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, approached them and started hurling racial abuses, calling them "Chinki," "Chinese," and "Momo" – slurs commonly directed at Northeast Indians due to their distinct features.
When the brothers protested and affirmed they were Indians from Tripura, the group turned violent. Angel was stabbed multiple times in the neck, head, and back, and brutally beaten with a metal kada on his head and spine. He sustained critical injuries, including severe spinal damage and brain hemorrhage. Rushed to Graphic Era Hospital, he battled for life on a ventilator for 17 days before passing away on December 26, 2025.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
The family has accused Dehradun police of initial delays in registering an FIR, allegedly treating it as a minor scuffle. Only after intervention from student bodies was the case filed, later upgraded to murder charges.
Five accused have been arrested: Avinash Negi, Suraj Khawas, Sumit Kumar, and two juveniles. The prime accused, Yagya Awasthi (a Nepali national), fled to Nepal. Police have announced a ₹25,000 reward and dispatched teams for his capture.
