Angel Chakma: Tragic Racial Attack on Tripura Student in Dehradun - Justice Demanded
Angel Chakma: The Tragic Death of a Tripura Student in Dehradun and the Nationwide Call for Justice
Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old ambitious MBA student from Tripura, tragically lost his life following a brutal racial attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Originally from Nandanagar in Unakoti district, Angel was in his final year at a private university. His father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, is a constable in the Border Security Force (BSF), posted in Manipur. Angel's death has become a heartbreaking symbol of the ongoing racism and discrimination faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country.
The Brutal Incident on December 9, 2025
On the evening of December 9, 2025, Angel Chakma and his younger brother Michael were shopping for household items in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. A group of six local youths, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, approached them and started hurling racial abuses, calling them "Chinki," "Chinese," and "Momo" – slurs commonly directed at Northeast Indians due to their distinct features.
When the brothers protested and affirmed they were Indians from Tripura, the group turned violent. Angel was stabbed multiple times in the neck, head, and back, and brutally beaten with a metal kada on his head and spine. He sustained critical injuries, including severe spinal damage and brain hemorrhage. Rushed to Graphic Era Hospital, he battled for life on a ventilator for 17 days before passing away on December 26, 2025.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
The family has accused Dehradun police of initial delays in registering an FIR, allegedly treating it as a minor scuffle. Only after intervention from student bodies was the case filed, later upgraded to murder charges.
Five accused have been arrested: Avinash Negi, Suraj Khawas, Sumit Kumar, and two juveniles. The prime accused, Yagya Awasthi (a Nepali national), fled to Nepal. Police have announced a ₹25,000 reward and dispatched teams for his capture.
"I protect the country, but couldn't protect my son. We are Indians too – why this discrimination?"
— Tarun Prasad Chakma (Angel's Father)
Widespread Protests and Demands for Justice
Angel's death sparked massive outrage across Tripura and Northeast communities. Candlelight vigils, marches, and protests erupted in Agartala and beyond, demanding swift arrests, compensation, and a dedicated anti-racism law.
Political leaders, including Tripura CM Manik Saha, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma, and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, condemned the incident and assured strict action.
The Bigger Picture: Racism Against Northeast Indians
This incident exposes the persistent prejudice faced by Northeast citizens in mainland India. Often misidentified as foreigners, they endure slurs, housing discrimination, and violence. Cases like Nido Tania's 2014 murder led to recommendations that remain largely unimplemented.
Activists are renewing demands for a specific anti-racial discrimination law, better protection for students, and awareness programs to foster unity.
Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call for India
Angel Chakma's senseless death is a stark reminder of the divisions that still plague our nation. As the investigation continues and protests persist, the hope is for swift justice and lasting change. No family should endure such pain, and no Indian should face hate for their appearance.
Rest in peace, Angel. May your tragedy lead to a more united and inclusive India.
